As a wise judge, Solomon dealt with anger/wrath, strife and contention. Since the fall of man these issues arise from man’s folly. But as Solomon shows us in Proverbs, they can be calmed and restrained by wisdom.
Anger stirs up trouble, produces strife, causes failure and can even lead to death; however, it may be quieted by wisdom, turned aside by a soft answer, or a reasonable (level-headed) response. “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1). “A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook a transgression” (Proverbs 19:11).
Strife is often stirred up by hatred, wrath, contention and pride. But strife may be stopped by actively working to resolve disagreements and conflicts by avoiding assumptions and calm communication. “Keeping away from strife is an honor for a man, but any fool will quarrel” (Proverbs 20:3). “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions” (Proverbs 10:12).
Contention creates catastrophic conditions that are usually caused by foolish things such as pride, scoffing, or drunkenness, but can sometimes be calmed by removing the culprit. “Drive out the scoffer, and contention will go out, even strife and dishonor will cease” (Proverbs 22:10). “Through pride comes nothing but strife, but wisdom is with those who receive counsel” (Proverbs 13:10).
As a Christ-follower and leader with MCHA there are times that you too must deal with man’s folly. As an example, limit your own folly while at the same time step into such issues that may arise with those on your team while playing hockey. Stepping into such issues takes both courage and wisdom. Both of these qualities come from knowing the One Who created you!
