Gehazi was a servant to one of Israel’s most prominent prophets, Elisha. Gehazi was privileged to witness numerous miracles performed by Elisha. See II Kings 4:8-37. Gehazi’s life intertwines deeply with Elisha’s mission, giving him a front-row seat to God’s powerful work in Israel. Gehazi’s story illustrates the importance of integrity and the consequences of dishonesty.
For example, Gehazi witnessed first-hand the healing of a high-ranking military leader. Naaman suffered from leprosy (II Kings 5:1) and traveled to Israel seeking a cure (II Kings 5:6). After following Elisha’s directions to wash himself in the Jordan River seven times, Naaman was miraculously healed (II Kings 5:9-14). Gehazi observed this miracle and the gratitude expressed by Naaman, who was willing to offer Elisha gifts as a token of appreciation. However, Elisha refused the gifts because the honor goes to the Lord and told Naaman to go in peace (II Kings 5:15-19)!
Gehazi however, could not let go of the temptation to gain wealth for himself and therefore secretly pursues Naaman! Deceiving him by stating that Elisha had changed his mind and wanted to accept gifts for the sons of the prophets. Naaman was pleased and willingly offered Gehazi silver and new clothes, believing he was doing a good deed (II Kings 5:20-23). Gehazi’s actions highlights his lack of integrity and his lust for material wealth over spiritual truth. Greed can certainly lead one away from God’s purposes.
After Gehazi returns, Elisha confronts him, asking him where he had been. Instead of confessing, Gehazi lied, claiming he had not gone anywhere. Elisha then proclaimed Gehazi’s punishment: he would be afflicted with the same leprosy that had once plagued Naaman (II Kings 5:24-27). This judgment not only affected Gehazi but also serves as a warning to others regarding the severe consequences of sin.
Gehazi’s story carries a timeless message about greed, integrity and accountability. Gehazi shows how the pursuit of wealth at the expense of character can lead to profound negative consequences. Ultimately, Gehazi’s story encourages us to pursue righteousness and maintain honesty in all matters, which brings honor to both God and man.
