An Anxious Heart?
Peter reminds us, “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your soul” (I Peter 1:8-9). Regardless of the trials you’re going through, there’s always a reason to rejoice. Anxiety is a particularly difficult trial. But when you focus on Christ, you’re able to not only endure, but thrive in times of anxiousness!
I Peter 5:7 counsels us to, “cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” Proverbs 12:25 tells us that: “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” This proverb reminds us that words have the power to hurt or heal. While it’s important to speak good words of truth and encouragement to the people around you, it’s important to speak those same words to yourself.
One of my favorite Scripture comes from Joshua. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord you God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Reminding ourselves that God is with us wherever we are is a huge comfort (or should be). Psalm 27:14 reminds us to… “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Waiting is hard, but it’s unavoidable. While it can be discouraging in the moment, God wants us to wait for him time. Next time you find yourself discouraged with God’s timing, try to reframe your thoughts. Rather than simply waiting, try changing your focus to confidently expecting.
